Stone Tower Munny Doll

So I've got something a little bit different for you today. Rather than a poster I've been working on a mini munny doll. Some friends and I at work wanted to spice things up with a fun white elephant gift idea for the design teams in the form of decorated munnys. We had 28 people participate! There was a great variety of munny treatments and concepts at the gift exchange and everyone was in an amazing festive mood. It was a really fun experience for all of us.

That said, mine doesn't make a whole lot of sense. When I started concepting, I kept having this vision of a stone tower in ruins. Not really sure how that would play out in a munny, but not being able to shake it from my mind, I bought some super sculpey, crafting tools and a woodlands scenic kit (for model trains and dioramas and such) and went to town.

I started out by taking off the munny's right arm and attaching it at his head with some aluminum foil. I then covered the entire munny in sculpey and started building out the rock formations and staircase. It took a good deal of time but eventually it went into the oven and was baked until cured (I did it for 32 minutes at 200 degrees since I had some fairly thick areas of sculpey).

Then it was time to paint. Using acrylics I applied a wash of gray and brown down over the entire doll. Then using an extreme dry-brush technique, I added the details around the stones to really bring the effect to life. From the scenic kit I applied model glue to the dolls head and applied two types of foliage: a fine light green powder for grass, and a thick moss for trees/bushes. Lastly, I used the scenic kit's water effects to create a waterfall. Applying it to the doll was a difficult and it took some additional time to build out the rapids, but I enjoy the effect very much.

And one final image is of the munny I received at the exchange (from my boss, no less). It's Harry Potter!! I love it, and with the thick-rim glasses it is reminiscent of me. As you can see, my boss, Amanda, cut up sentences from a Harry Potter book and glued them onto the munny. A lot of them are complete sentences, which is pretty sick because you can actually read them. I am very excited over it.

WOW! I haven't posted anything in several months. I've started a new job in that time period and haven't had nearly as much time to devote to my illustrations as I would have liked. Here we have a real labor of love: Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. This is my favorite game of all time. I've spent countless hours playing through it multiple times and enjoying each and every playthrough (except when the game would cause my computer to crash).

As you can see (hopefully) I've tried to step my game up a bit and do something far more complex than anything I've done to date. As such, I've actually been working on it piecemeal since before I started my new job in September, it's just taken forever. I borrowed my roommates wacom tablet to see what all the fuss was about. Truly an amazing tool, I'd loooove to spend more time with it. My mind is pretty convinced that I need to get one for future projects.

A little bit of back story on the game for the uninitiated. Baldur's Gate is an RPG for the PC dating back to the early 2000's (actually I think the first one came out in the 90's). It was my first exposure to the game developer Bioware. They are truly masterful storytellers. Much like their current games, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, they gave you great control in how the story would play out; you could be as righteous or as villainous as you desired and it would affect how characters would interact with you. The game was quite ahead of its time, doing then what many games are struggling to do well even now.

Shadows of Amn finds you waking up imprisoned in a lair. You find some equipment and a few travel companions from the first game, and you head out to figure why you were captured and tortured. You learn the tragic story of a tortured mage named Irenicus and his attempts to use your soul to become immortal. Only at the end is Irenicus' story fleshed out so you see his motivation and why he so desperately desires to be immortal. Along the way to your destiny you meet many colorful characters (brilliantly voice acted I might add), travel overseas and into the earth's depths, and fight a host of murderous monsters (dragons! duh!) Even the score is fantastic. By today's standards the graphics are outdated and the pacing might be slow for some, but the game itself is one of the highest rated games of all time (check Metacritic). Do yourself a favor and play this game if you haven't already; it's an awesome ride.

I would like to try five color variant for this print too, so expect that at some point.

My Neighbor Totoro Poster

So I finally got my lazy butt back to working on Miyazaki prints. This time I have one of his most famous, and certainly most iconic films, My Neighbor Totoro. The story is centered around the relationship of two sisters, Mei and Satsuki, who have just moved to a new house in the hill country, to be closer to their sick mother. There is very little of what I would consider plot; the joy comes from watching the two interact with each other and with the forest troll, Totoro.

Totoro and his little pals (tiny Totoros?) are cute as can be. They help the two sisters cope without their mother. Near the end of the film, Mei the younger sister, runs off to find her mother in the hospital to give her an ear of corn she's picked at the neighbor's. The townspeople can't find her anywhere and it's only when Satsuki calls Totoro that he and the catbus (literally a bus, cat and caterpillar crossed) show up to track down the missing Mei.

The pacing of the film is slow, but deliberate. Miyazaki wants you to feel with these children and to make a real connection with them. By the end, you just want to hang around and watch the children have more fun with Totoro. It's a brilliant little film and great for all ages.

Halo 3 Poster Tribute

Halo 3. For me, it was the one that started it all. Trying to learn how to aim with an Xbox controller, attempting to kill someone else in multiplayer, and what would become the beginning of hundreds of hours of online gameplay. This game has a soft spot in my heart.

At its core, Halo 3 is about the promise Master Chief made to Cortana to not leave her behind. In the midst of galactic war and the possible destruction of all sentient by the activation of the Halo rings, John-117 shows himself to be a man of his word. The relationship between Master Chief and Cortana is a complex and complicated one as she literally exists in his helmet, constantly with him, helping and monitoring him. I believe I even came across a book that delves into the psychology of that relationship, although I currently can't find a link to what I'd thought I'd seen.

But, in my humble opinion, it is the multiplayer where Halo 3 really shines. Granted, this poster is more of a tribute to the campaign than the multiplayer, but how would I base a series of posters off an ever-changing multiplayer landscape? I guess what I'm driving at is that although all the Halo game campaigns are a lot of fun, it is the constant online battles which bring me back for more. They are a chance to square off against real people across the world to prove your skills; to go toe-to-toe with your opponent and see who comes off on top. I'd dare say that online gaming has taken the place of more physical displays of male dominance like fighting or wrestling. This allows even the physically weak among us to be heroes albeit in a virtual environment.

At the end of the campaign your ship is blown in half and Master Chief and Cortana are left adrift in space. Halo 4 (sans Bungie) will pick up where 3 leaves off. The beginning of a new trilogy has Master Chief waking up from hyper sleep amidst the ship's exploding wreckage, only to come face-to-face with a giant alien ship. Shivers!

I still haven't forgotten my promised Halo Typography post. I WILL get to it and it's gonna be good; mostly because I have a lot of negative criticism of it. That's always fun!

Halo 2 Poster Tribute

I spent an hour today watching Bungie's documentary send-off of the Halo franchise. It was moving stuff to say the least. I normally don't think of what happens behind the scenes of video games, but to hear the story of Bungie and the fierce loyalty of its fans was tremendous. They were ahead of their game from their inception, and I'm am positively excited to see what they crank out next. Needless to say, they have a lot of pressure to go above and beyond Halo.

Sadly, I didn't get sucked in to playing Halo on the Xbox until Halo 3 came out, which meant I was playing their multiplayer not Halo 2's. The reason I say this is because Halo 2's campaign is my least favorite of the trilogy, but, from what I've heard from everyone else, its multiplayer was fantastic (at least one of its multiplayer maps was remade for Halo: Reach and I know several others were adapted for Halo 3 due to their popularity).

Continuing in the vein of the first poster, a new muted violet was selected for the major color (aside from white). Much of Halo 2 takes place on Covenant ships which have a violet palette, plus, you play as the Arbiter, a covenant unit, for half the game; the choice pretty much made itself.

During the campaign you complete a number of missions both as Master Chief and as the Arbiter. You take out one of the Covenant's High Councilors, The Prophet of Regret. And at the end of the game you throw down with the Brute High Chieftain, Tartarus, to prevent the Halo rings from firing.

I haven't forgotten my promised Halo Typography post, I just haven't gotten to it yet. I'll have some fun pointing out all my mistakes/inconsistencies throughout the typeface.

Halo: Combat Evolved Poster

I'm quite excited about the re-release of Halo: Combat Evolved in celebration of its ten year anniversary. With updated graphics, the game will remain true to the original in terms of its physics and all its architecture, the only difference will be an overhaul of its graphics to HD quality. From what I've seen so far, it looks beautiful, and, better yet, with the press of a button you can switch back and forth between the original gameplay graphics and the updated ones.

So, considering the anniversary update, and that the Halo series is far and away my favorite first-person shooter (until Halo came out I wasn't even in to FPS) it was only a matter of time until I devoted some time to creating a series around this epic game (yes, there will be at least two more posters coming at you).

My approach to this project was an attempt to envision the Halo universe in an unexpected, but clearly Halo-y (good word) sort of way. Early on I had an idea to play around with a predominantly white color scheme, which would allow for an interpretation of the characters and settings of Halo in a bold graphic style with lessened detail. The result is clean and crisp, but bold and striking at the same time. With such strong geometry in Master Chief's armor the simplification of its form highlights what makes his armor so iconic.

Furthermore, complementary colors were used to highlight areas of interest like Master Chief's iconic gold visor and Guilty Spark's serene blue glow (remember the first time he got pissed off and turned red? Don't anger the little guy). I'm not sure if future posters will feature complementary color highlights as well, it will have to work within the composition, but some sort of color variance will be used for sure.

Lastly, I was going to call it quits early until I discovered how much fun I was having designing my own Halo typeface for use in the poster. I ended up designing an entire alphabet to incorporate various textual callouts. Look for a post soon on just the typeface design. Cool little discovery made yesterday: I had sent in my Portal 2 posters to a number of gaming magazines for fan art submissions, and I saw mine P-body poster featured in XBOX Official Magazine. That was pretty baller! Although, since I wasn't sure whom to send my art to at the magazine I pretty much wrote as much to the guy I did send it to; they then used that email verbatum as the caption for my poster. So it's kind of awkwardly tacked on there. But hey, they got my name on there too!

Harry Potter: The End of a Legacy

Well, it's been a long time since I last uploaded anything, and what better way to return to blogging than with the end of a legacy? Harry Potter. I have adored the books since they came out. I grew up with Harry Potter literally the same age as he through book three and it had a profound and lasting affect on me. The movies, on the other hand, I've had a love/hate relationship with. But I don't want to focus on that. This final movie in the series was brilliant from start to finish. There were only a couple parts I took issue with, and with someone as critical of the movies as I am, that's saying a lot.

When I considered making a poster for Harry Potter my initial reaction was to make a series of posters, one for each book (as I often do). But then I was like, "Screw that! Series take too long!" I've been busy job hunting and working more and haven't had as much time to work on these personal projects as I would like. I wanted to try something a little new—a new style more illustrative and detailed in approach. After watching some process video's from Kevin Tong, and growing quite jealous of his absolute brilliance, I determined to try my hand at pen and ink.

Although my work can't hold a candle to his, I am quite pleased with the end result. I had a lot of fun incorporating the hand drawn typography into the composition. The hardest part for me frequently is color selection. But I found a palette that captured the mood of the films and books as somewhat of an ode to the whole series. In my mind there was only one option for the subject matter of the poster—the conflict between Harry and Voldemort, after all, that is the summation of the series. Good and evil, light and dark, love and hate, these themes set the off entire struggle.

Portal 2 Posters Revisited

After beating Portal 2 (single-player and cooperatively) I wanted to revisit my previous posters and update them with my new perspective. The poster of P-body is pretty much the same just some minor tweaking of its form and an implementation of a more pleasing format. Next I made a poster for Atlas,

P-body's able partner in science and problem solving. Lastly, to round it out, I made a poster for both of them together since you can only play as the droids in a cooperative game type.

Today we have a twofer, mostly due to my own indecision during the design process. I ended up liking both variations of color: day and night. I thought it worked well with many of the film's themes, both visually and thematically: life and death, light and dark, humans and nature, love and hate. Princess Mononoke is a film about the negative impact humans have on nature in their pursuit of its precious resources. The film's protagonist, Ashitaka, acts as a mediator between the animal gods of the forest and the human settlement trying to find a peaceful solution that doesn't end in all out war.

Continuing with my Miyazaki film series we have Kiki's Delivery Service. I had the privilege of watching this movie for the first time this past weekend and I really enjoyed it (no surprises there, right?). The story followed a young witch named Kiki who just turned thirteen. When a witch turns thirteen she leaves her home to find a town to become what I can only describe as its resident witch, i.e. she finds a town currently uninhabited by a witch and begins learning and applying her trade for the townsfolk. In Kiki's case she used her flying to open a courier business. The story was very cute. At the end of the story Kiki saved her young male suitor, Tombo, who was left hanging precariously from a runaway zeppelin. The zeppelin came to rest between a clock tower and another building as illustrated by the poster.

The Fountain Movie Posters

Darren Aronofsky's brilliant film The Fountain was the inspiration for this three poster series. I focused the designs of the posters on the three narratives of the film. The Fountain deals with the themes of life, death, rebirth and love. Each storyline essentially explores how the characters come to understand these truths.

Hugh Jackman plays the leading role in all three storylines. This gives continuity to the stories as they each take place 500 years apart. Part of the viewing pleasure is simply trying to decipher how many of the storylines are a part of Hugh Jackman's imagination or are they all actual reincarnations of himself (an interpretation that becomes especially plausible given the films over-arching theme of death being a part of life). The earliest storyline has Hugh Jackman's character as a conquistador in 16th century Spain as he embarks on a quest to find the Tree of Life in order to save his queen.

The middle storyline, set in present day, casts Hugh Jackman as a neuro-scientist hurriedly trying to find the cure for cancer as his wife comes to terms with her own mortality while dying from a brain tumor. I consider this storyline to be the 'real' story which then dictates how one interprets the two other storylines. Like in the conquistador story both of Hugh Jackman's characters are searching for a cure from death.

The last storyline is certainly the most ethereal and open to interpretation. Hugh is, what I would consider, a monk flying in a bubble-shaped spaceship with the dying Tree of Life. His goal is to fly into a dying star so both he and the Tree of Life may be reborn. I'm not doing the film any sort of justice in my explanation; the story is so interwoven it becomes a process (for me a fun one) to try and unravel it all.

In the end, each character learns about life and death. There is an enlightenment reiterated by Aronofsky's use of light throughout the film. Dark to light: denial to acceptance. In making this series I also wanted to capitalize on the journey to understanding that each character went through, and so there is an increase in the amount of light in each subsequent poster which is evident when the three posters are seen side by side. Though the three characters exist in different time periods tasked with similar problems, they all come to the same universal truth. Life ends in death.

Sunshine Movie Poster

A new poster for you today, this one for the Danny Boyle movie, Sunshine. Besides being a beautifully shot film, Sunshine boasts a diverse cast and a plot that turns towards the creepy by its end. The sun is dying, and humanity's last hope is a space shuttle, the Icarus II, strapped to a huge nuclear bomb in an attempt to restart the sun. The Icarus I was sent several years earlier but was lost in space and never heard from. When the Icarus II picks up the Icarus I's distress signal nearly at the sun, they alter their course to investigate the cause of its failed mission.

I wanted the sun to be prominent in the poster (obviously) as it is the ultimate destination of the Icarus II as well as being the hope for all of humanity; if the sun goes out the earth will not survive. I wanted the solar flare reaching towards the Icarus II to have a shape reminiscent of a hand reaching out to pull the ship in. There are two reasons for this: the first is that the crew all have these dreams about falling into the sun, as if it is their destiny calling to them and consuming them. The second reason is that while aboard the Icarus I, the captain of the Icarus I sneaks aboard the Icarus II. He's gone kind of psycho, killed his own crew, and goes about killing the remaining members of the Icarus II. So the movie has an element of horror and suspense to it which reinforces the grasping, hand-like solar flare.

The Design Behind the Hero Posters

After hearing me talk a bit about the design methodology behind these Hero posters, my girlfriend suggested that I make an entry on just that. So I'm hoping to explain many of the design choices I made in making this poster series, and, in the process, hopefully distinguish what makes these posters design and not simply art. Firstly, the grid. Voilá!

Pretty simple, huh? Composed of four columns and three rows posters were designed full size at 26" x 12". The reasoning behind those dimensions was that they were very close to the 2.35:1 ratio that the film was shot in. Such a wide format has a very calligraphic and dramatic nature to it that reinforces its relation to the Chinese movie. Once the grid and dimension structure was decided upon it then had to be applied to the compositions.

As you can see I made an effort to place key elements (e.g. people, horizons, objects) on the grid and at grid intersections. This adds rationale to the composition. It is no longer a simple intuitive placement of the poster's elements. The grid allows for much freedom too. Many of the shots in the film are not angled parallel to the horizon, that is, the camera is at an angle to the subject. I wanted to mirror that design choice in two compostions—the horizons are not flat, but inclines. And even though they are angled, I still created them to follow the grid stucture. Both compositions have key horizon points that fall on the grid (indicated by the circles). As you can see, a simple grid can be quite versatile.

One final explanation I think is due—the scale. I wanted very much to keep the characters small in relation to the entire composition. This was playing off of one of the themes of Hero, namely that the individual is small in comparison with the greater good. It seemed an ideal way to show 'the big picture' of the story (and the poster) by keeping the players small and the settings large.

Proposition in the Library

Rounding out my Hero movie poster series we have a scene from Emperor's take on things. Nameless meets the two assassin lovers in the library (a very monochromatic library at that) to demonstrate his incredible ability that will allow him to assassinate the Emperor. The greatest difficulty in depicting this scene was how to make sure the characters were emphasized and not lost in the overwhelming blue background. I suppose thematically this works in the movie since we are given false accounts of what actually happened; the characters are 'painted' with the same color as the storytellers' own imagination.

The Golden Forest

Moon confronts Flying Snow about murdering Broken Sword in a gorgeous yellow forest. They then throw down, culminating in Moon's death. I made the sky slightly green to push the color palette towards the yellow end of the spectrum; the composition already has the stand out of the red costumes, it didn't need a bright blue sky to compete with them.

Betrayed

The red sequence in Hero represents Nameless' false story of how he defeated the assassins. In it, Broken Sword is slain by Flying Snow after sleeping with his apprentice to get revenge on Flying Snow's broken fidelity. The assassins come off as being hot-headed and petty in this particular storyline, thus the rampant use of the color red.

In this scene Broken Sword is battling the Emperor after he fought his way to the palace with Flying Snow. The billowing gauzy curtains created a beautiful atmospheric effect that I attempted to capture.

New Hero Poster Series

I'm going to spend the next few weeks working on a series of posters based off one of my favorite movies, Hero. Hero chronicles a character called Nameless as he attempts to convince the Emperor how he single-handedly disposed of China's three most infamous assassins. The movie makes use of beautiful cinematography; color, in particular, plays a crucial role in the storytelling.

Shadow of the Colossus: Poster 6 - Phalanx

For the last poster in my Colossus series I picked Phalanx. By far the largest colossus in the game he is also seemingly the most gentle as he does not attack you at all. Like with Avion, Phalanx's battle takes place in the air as he glides around over the sand dunes.

Celosia is much smaller than most of the other colossi. In order to defeat him you have to use his fear of fire to scare him out of his cave and over the cliff behind him. He is very fast and once on his back it is much like riding a bucking bronco – hold on tight!

Jaws anyone? Hydrus is a creepy colossus because he spends so much of his time lurking underneath the water only to come rising out of the depths at you. Very eerie.

Latest colossus poster finished; this time it's number five, Avion. I got a great thrill the first time I fought this particular colossus when I jumped on his back as he flew over. It was so exciting trying to hang on as the colossus barrel-rolled. The only view that made sense to me that captures both the flight of Avion and the exhilaration of fight on his back was from over the top of it.

Another colossus poster just finished for you — this one of the third colossus, Gaius. I enjoyed the setting of this battle as you were on top of a large circular structure with nothing to hide you. It really emphasized the colossus.

I decided to start a series of posters based off the epic Playstation 2 game, Shadow of the Colossus. Although I doubt I'll do one for each of the 16 colossi, I'll probably only do my favorites, this one is of Valus, the first colossus in the game. I hope to create a subtle icon of each colossi I make a poster for that will reside in the bottom left-hand of the border, displaying which other colossi there are posters for.
